GI Certified Products / Bhagalpuri Silk

Bhagalpuri silk or Tussar silk is a traditional style of silk saris. This material is used for making saris named as Bhagalpuri sari. The origins of Bhagalpuri silk can be traced back to the Vedic age, but it is thought to have begun to be produced in the 12th century when Bhagalpur was a major trade center. The history of making Bhagalpuri silk sarees started 200 years by highly skilled craftsmen. The unique dyeing technique of these Bhagalpuri silk sarees sets them apart from the art silk sarees. Nowadays, instead of vegetable dyes, acid dyes are used because they are suitable for silk and easily available on the market. These handwoven saris showcase intricate designs, the shades produced are cream, light brown, beige, grey, camel colour, coffee, and gold tones and they are suitable for all occasions. To check if your Bhagalpuri sik is authentic, check the texture which is coarse and crisp. It has a natural, subtle sheen, and is not overly glossy. Also, Tussar sarees often have irregularities like slubs or nubs in the weave. If you burn the edges slightly, it should smell like burnt hair without leaving any solid residue. Additinally, look for the silk mark icon on the product details page. Products with this mark are made of pure silk.
