Handicraft / Sikki Crafts & Others

Sikki art is a traditional, eco-friendly, and GI-tagged handicraft from Bihar's Mithila region, created by women using a natural, golden-hued grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) found near riverbanks. The grass is harvested, dried, and sometimes dyed in bright colors (red, black, green) before being coiled around a core of khar grass. A needle-like tool, the tukuya, is used to shape the items. Artisans coil and weave this dried grass to produce intricate baskets, toys, dolls, and modern, colorful, and durable, decorative items. It is deeply rooted in local culture, often created by women for their own household use and as cherished gifts during marriage rituals. Traditionally used for functional containers, the craft has evolved to include intricate, contemporary wall hangings and artistic, pictorial, or, geometric, patterns. It is an entirely natural, biodegradable, and sustainable, craft, which has gained popularity globally.
