Khal Ukhal- In Bihari weddings, the Khal (mortar) and Ukhal (pestle) are primarily used in the Haldi Kutai (or Ubtan) ritual to symbolically prepare the marriage for a prosperous start. Married women from the family gather to grind raw turmeric into a fine paste using the mortar and pestle while singing traditional Bihari folk songs.
It is also used for" Dhan kutai". While the men perform the physical pounding, married women typically surround them, singing traditional folk songs called Sohar to create a festive atmosphere.
