Kohbar - Kohbar is a traditional, sacred art form from India's Mithila (Bihar) and Jharkhand regions, painted in the bridal chamber (Kohbar Ghar) to bless newlywed couples with prosperity, fertility, and marital harmony. It is a vital Madhubani/folk painting tradition featuring intricate symbols like lotus & 'purain' leaves, fish, and deities. The central motif is often a large lotus leaf (representing femininity) with a vertical pillar (representing masculinity). Other common symbols include fish (fertility), parrots (wisdom/love), bamboo (lineage), and the sun/moon.
It is traditionally painted by women on the walls of the Kohbar Ghar where the couple first meets.
